The Difference between Indica vs. Sativa

Indica vs. Sativa

It can be an overwhelming feeling visiting a cannabis dispensary for the first time, as you’ll come across products labeled Indica, Sativa and hybrid. But what does that mean? What are the differences? Which product is best for me? How do you pick a strain best suited for your needs and exactly what are the differences between the strains, their effects, and overall longevity?

This guide is designed to help you choose a strain curated just for you.

The Different Physical Appearances between Indica and Sativa

Just like all the other plants on Earth, cannabis plants vary in look, scent, and density.

The Indica plant is dark green, dense, and have short and wide fan leaves.

Sativa, on the other hand, stands tall and lean and is light green with long and narrow fan leaves.

Indica Effects vs Sativa Effects

There are plenty of myths when discussing different highs. A common myth is that Indica strains are stronger than Sativa. This is not true, as it is not the strains alone that produces the volume of the high, but the cannabinoids and terpenes that affect us all differently.

Indica produces a ‘body high’, it is because it’s dominated by a terpene called Myrcene. Myrcene offers relaxation, sleeping aid, pain and anxiety relief while also acting as an appetite stimulator, this explains why many consumers get the “munchies” after smoking. Because of Indica’s effects, it is best suited for nighttime use.

Sativa, on the other hand, produces a “head high” and maximizes creativity, boosts feelings of euphoria, and keeps you alert throughout the day. Therefore, Sativa strains are best recommended for daytime use.

Understanding Hybrids

In the ocean of Indica’s and Sativa’s, you have most likely also come across the term “hybrids”. These are new and unique strains that are bred from different types of “plant parents”, and they typically possess most of the medicinal benefits and properties of both parents.

Any two strains can be crossed in order to reach the desired efficiency, so we constantly see new strains being created and many of which are hybrids.

Cannabinoids and Terpenes

Cannabinoids and terpenes work together in harmony to deliver benefits to both medicinal and recreational cannabis users. Terpenes enhance the effects of major cannabinoids such as THC. When a strain contains higher amounts of terpenes, a sense of intensified feelings upon consumption is common. Research shows that Linalool, a terpene found in most Sativa strains, may boost neurotransmitters such as dopamine, which influences your mood and produces feelings of happiness and motivation.

Picking a Strain

Now that you know the differences between Indica and Sativa dominant strains, the key take-away is that if you want a more in-depth look into how to pick a cannabis product best suited for your needs, you should look beyond the strains and focus on the cannabinoids and terpenes.
